Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you had a fabulous celebration of our Savior's birth.
Dear husband and two daughters were all about driving into the city for the solemn high mass in the extraordinary form at St. Pat's. I was looking forward to the orchestra performing Franz Peter Schubert's mass in G major. The boys, on the other hand, were boo-hooing about the prospect of driving an hour to get there, arriving an hour early for the concert, and then sitting through a solemn mass at midnight. If I was an 8 or 10 year old boy, I probably wouldn't want to go either. So we settled for the local 4 pm vigil mass. Fr. Basil and our seminarian, Ian, celebrated an especially beautiful mass complete with the chanted Introit, and several prayers and hymns in Latin, and plenty of incense. Everyone headed home for our traditional Christmas dinner and gift exchange with Grandma. I tried to keep the kids in their Sunday best for a family picture, but as you can see, the neckties and high heels were shed the moment we walked in the door. Well, it is a decent shot that includes at least 7 of the kids, so it will have to do for now.
Today we are enjoying some down time as a family, though we did venture out in the rain to join the great aunts and uncles for desert. Now we are bracing for a major storm system which is scheduled to spin a few tornados across the Gulf Coast tonight. Time to invoke our Guardian Angels for protection. In the meantime, we rejoice in the Nativity and look forward to the future coming of the Lord.
